"The Padua School" designates a contemporary experimental approach to the goldsmith's art which originated in the mid-20th century at the "Pietro Selvatico" State Institute of Art in Padua. A school of applied arts founded in Padua in 1867, it was one of the earliest institutions of its kind in Italy.
Mario Pinton, teacher and artist, a polymath with a firm grasp of 20th-century culture, initiated the exploration process jointly with pupils of his, who in their turn would become master craftsmen and artists, building on his teachings on gold and the techniques for working it, based on moderation and restraint in choice of materials and design.
Francesco Pavan, Giampaolo Babetto and Graziano Visintin developed abstract formal idioms ranging from austere Minimalism to the entirely liberated expressive sign. Combining gold with high-tech materials, the youngest exponents of this school, Giovanni Corvaja, Stefano Marchetti and Annamaria Zanella, seek to overcome the severity of geometry while retaining stringency of composition.
