My project “Things” focuses on overconsumption. We throw away so many things and we buy more and more. Even though we talk about climate change ending the world, as we know it - we still don’t act accordingly. We are trapped in the consumer rat wheel spinning faster every day and the speed of product life cycles increase. The market always needs to increase their sales in order for the world’s economy to work. New seasons bring new trends, for your home, for your body, for your identity, for your status – out with the old in with the new. We believe that our shopping will make us happier but instead it is probably just weighing us down and in a strange way makes us want to have even more things.

This is a source of great anxiety for me, not only because I worry about our future, but also as a “maker” myself I am part of the consumerism food chain. In my pieces I am for example questioning the fact that all designers should make their own chair. A new groundbreaking, more comfortable and better looking one than what already has been done throughout the history.  Another example is a heavy chain of unnecessary or meaningless things that clutter up our homes. This includes things such as the banana shredder and the avocado splitter. / Åsa Elmstam
