1st Prize: Jiye Yun, born 1988, Chuncheon / Korea.
2007-2012 Studied Jewelry and Devices at the Graduate School of Kookmin University, Seoul, Korea, graduated with B.A. // 2009-2010 Exchange student at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Canada // 2012-2014 Studied jewelry and utensils at Kookmin University, Seoul, Korea, graduated with M.A. // 2016-2022 Studies in jewelery and equipment at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, with Prof. Karen Pontoppidan.
Statement of the jury: Jiye Yun's enameled brooches and pendants are the visualization of memories of landscapes. The artist created them after a hike in Northern Norway and sees the works as an opportunity to archive the experiences of her intensive nature experiences. The connection between the pieces in the group is clearly recognizable - and yet each can also stand on its own. Elaborately enamelled, with narrative coloring, the technically coherent pieces of jewelry have a high painterly quality. Elements that are actually flat create a lot of width and space. They combine for the viewer into sketches of mountains, shores, lakes, clouds, horizons. The artist's subjective experiences of the landscape can be understood, even if (unfortunately) one was not on the journey.
2nd Prize: Yuxi Lu, born 1997 in Chongqing / China.
2015-2019 Studies at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (SCFAI), China, completed with B.A 2020-2022 Studies in Jewelery Design & Gold- and Silversmithing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium, completed with B.A. Since 2022 Master's degree in Jewelery Design & Gold- and Silversmithing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium.
Statement of the jury: Like finds from a walk on the beach, picked up by chance, special and beautiful in their weathering, Yuxi Lu's jewelry initially appear like relics from a bygone era. At second glance, the deceptive processing becomes apparent: fascinating jewelery was created from industrial cable and insulation, which through the perfect transformation reflects nature and yet is completely technical material of our time.
3rd Prize: Magdalena Sophie Orland, born 1992 in Erfurt.
2013-2017 Studies in Textile Art/Textile Design, Faculty of Applied Arts Schneeberg, completed with B.A. // 2017-2019 Studies in Conceptual Textile Design, Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, graduated with M.A. // 2018-2021 co-founder of the Orland/Weber label // since 2021 course instructors, Textiles Zentrum Haslach, Austria // 2022 foundation of the interdisciplinary design cooperative OODD Studios with Susanne Ostwald.
Statement of the jury: Cylindrical bodies - characterized by economical colouring, transparency and lightness - are magically attractive. How can it be that material has such an attraction? A closer look reveals structures, surfaces and openings that are diverse and in their sequence are reminiscent of textile repeats and burnouts. They are enchanting, translucent objects inspired by Gothic architecture and contemporary lace. An unusual, experimental handling of material and technology, including pressure and heat, resulted in objects that reveal one of the most beautiful sides of textile fabric. The combination of silk and tech-textile CoreCoat yarns is exceptional, as a hybrid fabric with a high aesthetic appeal and is therefore worthy of an award.
Commendations to Shang Gao, born 1992 in Chengde / China.
2011-2015 Studied lacquer art at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, China, graduated with B.F.A. 2016-2019 Studies in the field of equipment and jewelry at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, Korea, graduated with M.F.A. Since 2019 PhD at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, Korea
Statement of the jury: Shang Gao's object is a tall hollow vessel, black and relatively light. Prima vista one would describe it as a »vase« or »vase-like vessel«, even if the shape is not as regular as is otherwise usual. What is particularly striking, however, is the object's material, the structure of which at first seems quite alien: a rough black surface that seems to absorb all the light. Vertical grooves run at regular intervals. The artist used a mixture of black lacquer, sepiolite and diatomite. These materials are shaped just before the paint has completely dried. The idiosyncratic shape combined with the unusual mix of materials persuaded the jury to give it a commendation.
