Intro
In 2020 Clarisa Menteguiaga won the Silver award with her Rapacious Piece at The Latin American Design Award. This year, she was recognized with the GOLD Award in her category, with her “Metastasis Series”.
The Latin American Design Awards recognize the excellence of the best design projects produced during the year by designers, studios, creatives and visual artists from all over Latin American.

About the wining series:
The pieces that make up the series (brooches, necklaces, and masks) are made with waste materials (fabrics and papers) and seaweed collected on the beaches of Chile. "Waste is a valuable material from the point of view of transformation. Transformation of the forms of creation and production, as well as the transformation of our thinking and thoughts on how to inhabit this planet. Reflection, responsibility, and commitment are essential to move away from the colonizing mechanics with which the human being has historically operated. "Metastasis" is a metaphor of how men destroy everything in their voracious path. How we make the planet we inhabit, sick, as well as our own bodies. I think the critical voice and transforming design has become a bit silenced between so much consumption. We must return to those reflective voices, and that is why I believe that my training in arts very favorably fed my proposal in design. ”(cm)

This series is a metaphor for the actions of the human being, who aggressively propagates, sacrificing nature while degrading the life of his own species. The pieces embody ideas as diverse as excessive growth, genetic manipulation, deformity, disease, contamination and death, as well as beauty and exuberant life. These pieces were made with organic elements such as algae collected from the coasts of Chile, recycled fabrics and paper, joined by hand stitching and colored with natural pigments (freeze-dried and dehydrated beets, berries, chlorophyll, spirulina and turmeric powders).

Clarisa Menteguiaga is a designer from the University of Buenos Aires and a Visual Artist from the Catholic University of Chile. She was Head of the Joya Brava Chile Association from 2018 to 2020. She is a freelance designer, university professor and develops her personal work in contemporary jewelry, printmaking and photography.
