Since 2016, it has been an annual event showing the work from faculty, current students and alumnus from Jewelry and Metals Studio, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. Everyone gets together to communicate, encourage and support each other with their jewellery art.

Wei Zheng’s Biography in the New Book of the Tang Dynasty says, “One can use copper as a mirror to tidy his appearance. One can use history as a mirror to understand how nations rise and fall. One can use predecessors as a mirror to understand gains and losses.” Similarly, we can use art as a mirror to understand society now. We can use professionalism as a mirror to perfect our lives and use the crafting of jewelry to perceive our spirits.
Annual Exhibition of Jewelry & Metals Studio begins with the 2016 “Decade of the Sea” exhibition with a “mirror” for every year. Including this year, that makes a total of five years. Although there has been a mix of familiar and new faces over the years, every faculty member and student still exhibits the utmost sincerity and academic passion when they communicate with one another. The artists involved in this year’s exhibition are the faculty, students and graduates of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts jewelry program. Artists hail from 20 different academic schools and companies. Some are university professors who founded their own studios, others have started their own jewelry brands. They have each worked tirelessly in order to design these exquisite pieces, and they each display a distinct understanding of jewelry art.
Every successful show is a result of everyone’s participation, especially this year. Even though 2020 has been a very unique and difficult year, everyone has still submitted their works of art as usual. This is the power of unity in the studio, and it also displays everyone’s commitment to jewelry art. We use these works of art to communicate with one another and we continue to explore the unknown, as well as historical precedents. This is the development of contemporary Chinese art.
As this is an annual exhibition, we look forward to this annual meeting to encourage and support one another as we pursue jewelry art. 2020 is about to slip away. Let us persevere onwards and eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring.
Special thanks to the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the Shanghai Industrial Art and Design Association.
