Intro
A large part of Xiaochuan's works tends to focus on observing the animals, plants and other elements in the natural world, which she has enjoyed doing since childhood. As she grows up, she still maintains great curiosity about observing the “world”. She stressed that each of her creative processes is just about fulfilling these curiosities one by one, “loading” them with different forms of design to satisfy her inner self.

The collection exhibited in Xiaochuan’s studio ranges from figurines to fossils, with a wide variety but an inherent order. She opened a few drawers to let me see, which were filled with various types of amber rough stones. These are one sort of her main creative materials in recent years. Due to a unique formation process, amber inadvertently records the traces of life that existed during a certain period of time. While holding an amber in hand, it seems I have grasped a corner of time and space millions of years ago. To many people, this may not be meaningful, but for someone like Xiaochuan, this moment is like being struck by the lightning of fate, and something needs to be done to remember such an intertwined moment.

The series Vision and Sky Voyage are both observation devices Xiaochuan made for the purpose of observing time. The creative perspective she chose is very interesting: to reproduce the observations of observation. When admiring an amber, we often instinctively hold it in front of a light source to see it through the penetration of light. Relying on light sources to explore the inner world of amber has become a specific action for observing this mysterious material. Xiaochuan wanted to freeze this action and created a medium as a concrete link between a corner of time and space in the long river of the universe and the observer. The deliberately squeezed perspective means to spark a desire to explore more, and I always want to find that glimmer of light through the cracks.
