After graduating from the Jewelry Design Department of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in 2017, Ren Junying was enrolled to the Craft Department of Tokyo University of the Arts for a 7-year advanced study of traditional Japanese metal (carving) craftsmanship. During her postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) studies, Junying’s research focus gradually shifted from the design concept and expression of jewelry to the perception of creative techniques and the essence of materials. In the coming exhibition, Junying will bring back her complete set of doctoral graduation works and the latest extensions to Beijing, which is also the first exhibition of this series in China.

Junying Ren
In her understanding, jewelry creation not only involves “pre-design”, but also creates opportunities for dialogue through intimate contact between the “hand” and tools and materials, therefore subconsciously influencing the final presentation of the work.
Taking “the moments of beauty and warmth of life revealed through death” as inspiration, Junying produced the postures of “tombstones embedded with flowers” using only iron and silver as materials, after tempering for hundreds and thousands of times. In the creation process, she witnessed the process of “materializing” intangible and indescribable spiritual scenes into tangible forms of jewelry that could be touched. The purpose of creating this series is not to mourn, but to freeze and reproduce the precious moments that have passed in life.
Natural rusting of iron, with corroded surface, is the coating left over by time. This typical material in Japan perhaps represents the aesthetic attitude of Wabisabi towards the fading of life. Junying made rough iron plates into delicately-textured “tombstones”, “plaques”, and “boxes”, each piece of iron imbued with warmth and filled with silent stories. The flowers embedded on the surface happen to become a language of expression, having each petal carved with silk-like fine texture. The array of flowers is arranged like characters and notes, exhibiting a natural order of life. These flowers may not appear luxurious or exquisite, but are blooming from decay with the power of life.
Opening Date and Time: 14th - 22nd September, 2024, 13:00-18:00 h.
