Imagine a three-dimensional object that you can seamlessly wear. Or a golden bowl you can adorn as a brooch… Beyond your imagination, the reality is that all of these are brilliant exercises in trompe l’oeil goldsmithing. They are tricks on the eye, created not in paint, but in precious metals that are expertly fused to create the illusion of depth. These are works of legendary French artist Claude Chavent.
Artist list
Claude Chavent
Precious metals are burnished at the crossroads of color and light. Chavent coaxes our perception, creating a rich breadth of character amongst his collection, as light's reflection cheerily bounces from one lustrous plane to the next. Each piece is consequently imbued with a radiant shine. Charming and mysterious illusions manifest as textured surfaces incite the heart and mind.
Across the Brooch Collection, the elegance of form is expertly paired with the marriage of metals in iron, steel, and 18K gold. Such seamless and uncomplicated vision transforms a humble brooch into a sheer work of art.
By the way the artist draws upon a variety of material to fulfill his fascination, he illustrates the incredible mastery of his craft. Slender, thin forms miraculously culminate into grand and majestic statements for the body. These works are a self-portrait in Chavent’s artistic exploration. Each one, a pledge of love.
My purpose is to bring volume and movement to forms that should be light and perhaps ambiguous. I use perspective and trompe l’oeil to do so. When the piece is absolutely flat, the illusion is created by the reflection of light over different textures. Ideally, I want to simplify more and more, so that the distance is the shortest from the concept to object.

About the artist
Chavent was born in 1947 and came to the world of art jewelry after beginning a career in chemistry. He is now acclaimed as an artist for his exercises in perception and trompe l’oeil, a theme prominent in paintings since the Renaissance. Now retired, the artist’s remaining works at Patina live on in our Contemporary Estate Collection.
The artist looks back at a life and career from his studio, first in Lyon to then one established outside of Montpellier, France. His works have been published internationally, and have been exhibited across Europe and the United States. Chavent’s pieces are also in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
