At a time when gold — and other precious metals — are reaching very high values, it is perhaps also worth questioning how the function of a store of value continues to be relevant in jewellery, and how it affects contemporary jewellery that has become detached from this dimension. The use of gold in the making of the pieces is entirely optional, serving only as a starting point for reflection on the present moment in our art, and forming part of the Biennial's broader theme: the sustainability and coexistence of human beings with the different worlds that surround us — from the mineral and the vegetable to the digital and the spiritual — how we connect to materials, and how we might be "altered" by the things we create.
