Intro
From 8 to 25 October, MUDE - Design Museum hosts Wearable Art… 3rd Skin, an exhibition that presents contemporary jewellery as an artistic practice built in direct relationship with the body. Curated by Marita Setas Ferro, the exhibition is part of ModaLisboa Priority and the result of a partnership between Double J Collective and ModaLisboa.

Artist list

Noura Alserkal, CARLA_M, Henar Iglesias, Nasim Javid, Lidija Kolovrat, Armin Najib, Olga Noronha, Taibe Palacios, Valentim Quaresma, Joana Santos, Amanda Stumpf
The project was born in Dubai, where it was the inaugural exhibition of Double J Collective, a gallery dedicated to Contemporary Fine Craft Art, co-founded by Jonathan Silva and Jorge Cerveira Pinto. At Lisboa Fashion Week it takes on a new configuration, with other artists and other works, while continuing the same inquiry into wearable art and the concept of a “third skin”.

Like clothing, jewellery has long been a form of self-expression, reflecting the cultural and artistic changes of its time. Framed as fashion’s “third skin”, it extends the body and brings together artistic innovation and function… a visual narrative and a multidisciplinary dialogue where art and fashion meet.

Jewellery, sculptural objects and wearable structures explore material, scale, volume and movement, bringing together craft techniques, artistic experimentation and processes drawn from Fashion, Design and the Arts. When worn, these objects extend and transform the human form… altering silhouette and movement and opening other possibilities for expression and the construction of identity.

Organic and industrial materials, traditional techniques and experimental processes give form to pieces that move between wearability and the autonomy of the art object. Jewellery can be worn, observed or experienced… carrying memory, cultural references and visual narratives that reach far beyond ornament.

Art, its principles, and its language are vital to creation, regardless of its domain… whether in fashion or design. It is through conception, through the creative act itself, that a project unfolds, taking shape as a product or piece.
/ Mónica Moura, A moda entre a arte e o design, 2007

Here emerges the concept of the third skin: an extension of the human form beyond its biological limits, awakening a consciousness of mutability and change. As wearable sculpture, jewellery embraces and reshapes the body, creating hybrid spaces where craft and concept intertwine.

About the artists

Amanda Stumpf: Amanda Stumpf’s contemporary jewellery explores fashion, identity and artistic expression. Inspired by the architecture of ancient civilisations, her pieces act as visual narratives that blur the line between art and fashion.

Armin Najib: Armin Najib (b. 1989, Tehran) is a Dubai-based artist working in sculpture, drawing, photography and wearable art. Rooted in mechanical engineering, his practice treats art as inquiry. His work is held in collections including CELINE (LVMH).

CARLA_M: Portuguese designer Carla Matos studied jewellery at Contacto Directo, Lisbon, and sustainable fashion at UAL. Winner of the Femina Award (2021) and European Climate Pact Ambassador, she took CARLA_M. to an IFM incubator in Paris.

Henar Iglesias: Henar Iglesias revives forgotten techniques through a contemporary aesthetic shaped by mathematics. Specialising in featherwork, she traces vector fields onto mosaics to guide the feathers, turning them into wearable art.

Joana Santos: Joana Santos’s work explores the tension between contemplation and wearability. Through textile jewellery, she challenges jewellery’s relationship with the body, treating it as an independent art object beyond adornment.

Lidija Kolovrat: Bosnian-born Lidija Kolovrat studied film and fashion in Zagreb and moved to Lisbon in 1990, founding KOLOVRAT. Shaped by deconstruction, urban culture and art, her sustainable collections are shown each season at ModaLisboa.

Nasim Javid: Nasim Javid is a multidisciplinary designer focused on contemporary jewellery, rooted in Persian art. Blending organic forms, Middle Eastern elements and Persian curves, her work celebrates the beauty of flaws and irregularity.

Noura Alserkal: In Magic of the Scent, Noura Alserkal explores scent as a trigger of memory and connection. Using materials such as Dkhoon and Bakhoor, her pieces blend fragrance and form into a multi-sensory dialogue between body, memory and art.

Olga Noronha: Born in Porto in 1990, Olga Noronha studied Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins and holds a PhD from Goldsmiths. Her Medically Prescribed Jewellery merges anatomy and medicine into wearable sculpture, shown at ModaLisboa since 2013.

Taibe Palacios: Chilean designer, artist and maker Taibe Palacios began as a children’s book author and illustrator. Since 2003 she has made handcrafted jewellery, experimenting with organic materials, mainly seaweed. Award-winning, she exhibits internationally.

Valentim Quaresma: Valentim Quaresma trained in jewellery at Ar.Co and created accessories for Ana Salazar from 1990 to 2010. Winner at ITS#7 (2008), he has shown at ModaLisboa since 2011, turning everyday objects into jewellery and sculptural pieces.

About Double J Collective
Contemporary Art Through Material Intelligence

Double J Collective is a Dubai-based contemporary art gallery advancing material-led practices from the Gulf and beyond. Working across clay, glass, textile, metal, wood, cork and hybrid media, the gallery represents artists for whom material is not simply a means of production, but a source of knowledge, experimentation and meaning. Through exhibitions, commissions and research, Double J supports artists who transform technical mastery and material knowledge into distinctly contemporary artistic languages.

We have built something distinctive: a gallery dedicated to artists with an exceptional command of materials, working with Emirati, UAE-based and international voices, and occupying a largely unique position in Dubai and the wider region.

Double J positions material mastery as a contemporary art practice, not a craft category. For our artists, material is a conceptual language in its own right… a vehicle for inquiry, memory and critical thought, not a support for decoration. Process becomes argument: the choice of clay, glass, metal, wood or fibre carries meaning, and the gesture of making is inseparable from the idea being explored. This is a curatorial position, not a stylistic one… it defines how we select artists, build exhibitions and speak about the work.

The artistic proposition always comes first. Material intelligence is our distinctive territory, and technical mastery serves that proposition rather than replacing it. Craft, in this context, is a method and a form of knowledge, rooted in histories of making that stretch across the Gulf, West Asia and beyond… never a limiting label, and never separate from contemporary thought.

Exhibitions are curated around ideas, not materials. Themes such as memory, cultural transmission, ecology, embodied knowledge, migration and the tension between heritage and experimentation shape our program. Each exhibition builds an argument across works and artists, using material practice as evidence rather than as subject. This curatorial method allows craft-based and design-adjacent media to be read with the same critical seriousness applied to painting, sculpture or new media, and positions our artists within the wider conversations shaping contemporary art today.

This approach turns material focus into strength. From Dubai, Double J connects material knowledge from the Gulf and West Asia directly to global contemporary art discourse, building a program that is regionally grounded and internationally legible… a gallery where mastery of material is understood, above all, as a form of contemporary artistic intelligence.

Double J Collective was founded in Dubai by co-founders Jonathan Silva and Jorge Cerveira Pinto.
