Intro
From 25 to 27 September, the Cloister of Convento dos Cardaes hosts Jewellery Room, the space that brings together contemporary jewellery galleries and completes the Biennial’s exhibition programme. Over three days, from 12 pm to 6 pm, the public will be able to see up close — and purchase — pieces by some of today’s finest jewellery artists.
Lisbon has more than thirty years of tradition in contemporary jewellery and a small but loyal and knowledgeable audience, reinforced in recent years by the many foreigners who have made Portugal their permanent home. This year, Jewellery Room brings together Portuguese and international galleries, each presenting a selection of pieces in dialogue with the Biennial’s themes.

The exhibition At the Beginning of the Future brings together the work of 12 Estonian jewellery artists. Responding to the biennial’s central theme of coexistence, the display explores how humans, nature and technology might inhabit the future and what new relationships might emerge between them.

Abstract, architectural forms mingle with organic ones, creating the foundations for an alternative miniature ecosystem. Together, the works form a kind of speculative landscape in which humans, plants, insects, minerals, technology and artificial intelligence exist in new and as-yet undefined relationships.

Jewellery’s particular quality lies in its proximity to the body. The exhibition uses this intimate scale to raise questions that extend beyond the individual object: how might we imagine a world that reaches beyond humanity’s existing ambitions? What kinds of relationships do we want, and with which companions do we wish to share an ever-expanding future? Here, jewellery becomes a space for exploring and testing different values, identities and new forms of coexistence, proposing possibilities for what the world might become.
