. This artwork weaves together devotion, memory, and material transformation, offering a contemplative dialogue between sacred symbolism and personal sentiment.
. At its heart—both figuratively and literally—is a delicate textile composition, meticulously woven from tiny glass beads. Suspended within this shimmering fabric are an array of love tokens: miniature heart pendants in gold and silver hues, scattered like celestial bodies across a luminous sky. Their varied shapes and textures suggest a history of accumulation, as though each charm carries a whispered story of love, longing, or protection.

. To the left, a necklace crafted from galvanized prayer candles linked with gold, adds a spiritual dimension. These elongated metallic forms, once vessels for devotion and ritual, have been reimagined into an adornment—an object meant to be worn close to the body, bridging the sacred and the personal. The incorporation of gold links hints at transformation, turning ephemeral prayer into something tangible and enduring.

. On the right, a galvanized ex-voto in the shape of a stylized human heart stands as a profound gesture of offering and faith. Ex-votos, traditionally left at religious sites as tokens of gratitude or supplication, carry deep associations with healing and divine intervention. Here, its placement within the composition suggests a relic of devotion, a materialized wish, or an embodied plea—its metallic surface both protective and vulnerable.

This artwork weaves together devotion, memory, and material transformation, offering a contemplative dialogue between sacred symbolism and personal sentiment.
At its heart—both figuratively and literally—is a delicate textile composition, meticulously woven from tiny glass beads. Suspended within this shimmering fabric are an array of love tokens: miniature heart pendants in gold and silver hues, scattered like celestial bodies across a luminous sky. Their varied shapes and textures suggest a history of accumulation, as though each charm carries a whispered story of love, longing, or protection.

To the left, a necklace crafted from galvanized prayer candles linked with gold, adds a spiritual dimension. These elongated metallic forms, once vessels for devotion and ritual, have been reimagined into an adornment—an object meant to be worn close to the body, bridging the sacred and the personal. The incorporation of gold links hints at transformation, turning ephemeral prayer into something tangible and enduring.

On the right, a galvanized ex-voto in the shape of a stylized human heart stands as a profound gesture of offering and faith. Ex-votos, traditionally left at religious sites as tokens of gratitude or supplication, carry deep associations with healing and divine intervention. Here, its placement within the composition suggests a relic of devotion, a materialized wish, or an embodied plea—its metallic surface both protective and vulnerable.

Together, these elements speak of love as an act of preservation, devotion as an enduring gesture, and objects as vessels of human experience. This is not merely a collection of materials; it is an invocation of memory, faith, and the intimate connection between the spiritual and the corporeal.

Vade Retro! #2 is one of the four pieces with the same title made in 2021, exploring the motifs of faces and masks.

As an object of protection for the 21st century, referring to a primitive origin when questioning the relevance and present function of the amulet or protective talisman, I designed a series of pieces of the apotropaic genre.

Under the idea of fear of death, in the double conflict between the unknown, that repels us, but that simultaneously attracts us as if in a vortex without return, possible magic or metaphysics appears.
In the image of Perseus‘ mirrored shield that protects the wearer by reflecting the evil eye and in the example of the armour object, starring this piece, a threatening or defensive quality emerges that, however, in its power seduces us. - Catarina Silva

Bio

I was born in Lisbon and studied jewellery at Ar.Co (Centro de arte e comunicação visual) between 2000 and 2005. I have worked at Galeria Reverso and since 2013 in Galeria Tereza Seabra. Currently I am a teacher as well as the head of the Jewellery Department in the school where I graduated.

Statement

Referring to a primitive origin when questioning the relevance and present function of the amulet or protective talisman, I conceived pieces with a surrealistic and neo-pop assemblage that results in the intertwine between ornamental forms that allude the naturalistic in counterpoint with apparently mechanical and artificial elements. Like a meditative chant, I choose to work with beads for its ritualistic and contemplative character that is in the making. The premise of constructing portable, usable Jewellery associated with the expressive and inventive qualities of drawing and collage enabled contrast between volume and lightness, thus ensuring an ethereal sensation and abstract perception of these pieces. I intend to demonstrate the significance of Jewellery as a discipline with an enriching artistic practice decisive in the definition and construction of culture in contemporary existence.
