Intro
It is urgent that contemporary jewellery be included in contemporary art auctions. This integration enriches the art market and benefits the understanding of these works which hold significant affinities with the other visual arts, says Cristina Filipe, curator of this auction and author of the book Contemporary Jewellery in Portugal. From the avant-garde of the 1960s to the early 21st century, adding: The use of a work of art on the body or in architectural space underlies its nature, but its acquisition presupposes its preservation as a heritage asset. I would point out that one of the largest art collections in Portugal includes around eighty pieces of jewellery by René Lalique and that, when the collector acquired them, he also commissioned the design of two pieces of furniture/display cases to store them in his collection.
