An exhibition organised by PIN – Associação Portuguesa de Joalharia Contemporânea, in partnership with the Museu de São Roque da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, MUDE – Museu do Design e da Moda, Coleção Francisco Capelo and the Museu da Farmácia.
A central initiative of the 1st Biennial of Contemporary Jewellery of Lisbon, the exhibition of contemporary jewellery also features performance, sculpture, photography, and film in dialogue with the space and works of the Church and Museum of São Roque and the Museu da Farmácia, the two venues hosting the exhibition project. Relationships are occasionally established with pieces from the Historical Archives of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa and the Casa Ásia – Coleção Francisco Capelo, not so much to provide contrast as contextualisation, as if the contemporary works were an integral part of the places where they are exhibited, amplifying their meaning.

The exhibition programme seeks to revisit works from these museum collections through dialogue with contemporary pieces.
This exhibition arose following the project ‘Jewellery and Objects of Protection for the 21st Century’, developed by PIN in partnership with MUDE during the first period of confinement in Portugal, becoming the theme of the 1st Biennial of Contemporary Jewellery of Lisbon. It adopts and expands on this topical theme through the inclusion of works by other national and international artists from the last twenty years who reflect on the Body, Fear, and Protection in different ways.

On 7 and 8 October, the exhibition will host the Precious Crown belonging to the collection of the Museum of the Sanctuary of Fatima, made from jewels donated to the Sanctuary in gratitude for Portugal's avoiding of the devastation of World War II. Since 1984 the crown also holds a contact relic in the form of the bullet that wounded Pope John Paul II in Rome, thus taking on the function of a reliquary. It will appear as part of a triptych with the altars of the reliquaries in front of the main altar of the Church of São Roque.
The dialogue between apparently heterogeneous works aims to stimulate reflection around the disturbing historical moment we are experiencing.

Two meetings will be organized within the scope of the exhibition: the Precious Crown Colloquium on 7 October, which brings together several specialists on the subject, moderated by Madalena Braz Teixeira. And on the opening weekend, 16, 17, and 18 September, the Colloquium Body Fear and Protection brings together several researchers from different areas who will help us to reflect on the core themes of the exhibition.

During the opening weekend of The Biennial and as an integral part of its programming, two performances will take place in the Cold Sweat exhibition context: "Dr. Knap: Qualified Jewellery Artist" with the artist Agnieszka Knap at the Museu da Farmácia, more directly related to the theme Body, and the performance "Throwing Knives" with the artist Gisbert Stack on September 17th, with the theme Fear, will take place at the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Museu de São Roque.
