Adriana Radulescu
Adriana Radulescu has a master’s degree in architecture and urban design from Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, Romania, and metalsmith training from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in Washington DC. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally and is represented exclusively by Jewelers’Werk Galerie.
This exhibition comprises necklaces of corrugated copper, enamel, and silver that showcase Radulescu’s background in architecture along with her art jewelry vision. Though sturdy in appearance, the thin layers of colored glass enamel add a fragility that belies the ruggedness of the copper. The title Dwelling is intended as a play on words to reflect the aesthetic of weathered buildings’ surfaces, as well as the act of pondering things. Dwelling is exploring the imagery of dwellings’ shapes and aging colors while dwelling upon my own remembrances… My aim is to create pieces that stimulate memories of things or happenings, without them being any of those. I wish my jewelry to be that sensory stimulus that triggers emotional memories from one’s personal life, Radulescu notes.
I titled this series “Dwelling” because the first inspiration was the aesthetic of weathered dwellings’ surfaces, which can be found everywhere from simple quarters to sumptuous palaces. The original title was Dwellings, but then I realized that what I am doing speaks to my habit of dwelling over things.
My architectural theory professor taught us about Leibnitz’s Monades; he told us that creativity emerges at the moment we become cognizant of the snippets from our collections of life long-stored visual memories. I recognize the images I collect are associated not only with places, people or objects but with a whole spectrum of feelings, from serenity, hope, to very deep anger. “Dwelling” is exploring the imagery of dwellings’ shapes and aging colors while dwelling upon my own remembrances. The collection, for now, consists of necklaces. There can be more dwelling to be done over other objects in the future. The pieces look sturdy, made of corrugated copper, but in fact, are fragile as the colors are a thin layer of glass enamel.
I enjoy constructing shapes in metal, and experimenting with different forms, heat and now color; for me, the process of making something with my own hands is very healing and rewarding. My aim is to create pieces that stimulate memories of things or happenings, without them being any of those. I wish my jewelry to be that sensory stimulus that triggers emotional memories from one’s personal life. Radulescu notes.
The opening:
September 18, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Opening hours:
