My work is strongly based on my Fiber Art MFA experience, as well as on my background in Calligraphy which I have been practicing since my youth. Much of my artwork reflects the power of a strong brush stroke, which leads me to be creatively spontaneous. Spontaneity is also a fundamental Korean aesthetic that does not embrace perfection. Through a lifetime of practicing calligraphy I have been able to gain a way to express inspirations freely and simplify what I see with lines and forms.

This series of ‘Portraits of Now’ is a personal observation about people, especially couples, facing the circumstances of a Pandemic. My work generally reflects my personal daily life, though I have to accept the fact that current global events influence each individual’s life. Experiencing the Covid-19 reality, I have come to realize that we are globally one people sharing the same social and political challenges. Some works in the series also refer to American cultural idioms, proverbs, puns, etc. Simple lines and forms within this series also represent complex emotional concepts.

I have been reading reports about the effects of Covid-19 pandemic realities on relationships in marriages, families, and societies, and the challenges that humans face while social distancing. This series of work focuses on relationships between people, whereupon I arrange pairs of portraits, created as one artwork. The artworks demonstrate how couples, or people, in general, face the Coronavirus period. The main technique I use for this series of work is fundamental silver soldering while utilizing flat wires for shaping facial expressions, which I liken to a brush stroke. Sand, soil, stone dust, that I have collected over last few years from whenever and wherever I traveled, are applied to the surfaces, and colors are also applied from natural pigments./ Myung Urso
