Jewellery & Object Artist in residence: Marta Boan

During the student trip last year to Barcelona, the Jewellery & Object BA (Hons) team visited the renowned jewellery department at the Escola Massana. After an exchange of presentations by programme leaders Ramón Puig and Sarah O’Hana, where both schools talked of their history and student work, Marta stepped forward asking if she could come to the University of Lincoln to carry out a project for which she needed specialist equipment.

Marta studied Fine Art at the University of Barcelona before studying jewellery at the Escola Massana. She started her own work 6 years ago with the project Min. (diminutive of minimum). Her work is based on repetition, always in a simple way and always travelling to the limits of ‘small size’.

She is now artist in residence at the University of Lincoln thanks to the AA2A scheme and is working on her Useful project, jewels with an added function or functional portable objects to put on as jewellery. She is searching for a clear and basic aesthetic as well as maximum simplicity to formalize her pieces. Marta is working on making something useful for daily life that is both a beautiful decorative jewel to wear as well as a tool that can be used.

The enormous benefit that having a resident professional in the workshops has been evident since she arrived. Students are able to witness first hand how live projects develop to a deadline, how to manage external suppliers and, importantly, they seamlessly absorb specialist knowledge from her just by sharing our many workshops. Marta has wasted no time in accessing most of the Art and Design departments to complete her Useful project, mainly Fine Art and Fashion but she has also been known to knock on the door of the School of Science for help. It has been immeasurably rewarding to have Marta working amongst the Jewellery & Object team. Look out for her exhibition in May 2013.

Sarah O'Hana

“Somehow I try to work with what has always been there, to take it and make it in a different way. My way.” (Marta Boan)
