First, the word “providence” means foreseeing care, protection, and guidance. It can be seen as God’s guidance and care for human beings or as the laws of nature governing the events of the world.
Second, Providence is the state capital of Rhode Island, USA. The city is also a home to Rhode Island School of Design, which all of the participating artists and the curator have graduated from.

The history behind the city’s name is in fact a product of the first definition. In 1636, Roger Williams, a religious exile, founded the city we now call “Providence.” He named the area in honor of God, who in his merciful act of providence revealed a haven for him and his followers.  In 2021, we are living in unprecedented times, facing challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, wars, and poverty. Siat Gallery’s Providence aspires to serve as an oasis of solace amid the surrounding uncertainties and offer hope in the guidance of providence.
