Artist list

Marika Strohschnieder
Marika was born in Germany where her creative career started as a stone sculptor. She then undertook formal studies in the field of art conservation. Since graduating in 1998 she has worked as a conservator in five countries and in a diverse range of organizations – including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and currently at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Parallel with her work as an objects conservator Marika has continued to explore a range of materials in her artistic practice and more recently has focused on jewelry making.

Marika’s interest in jewelry began when she undertook a workshop at Fitzgerald Jewelry in Brooklyn, New York in 2001. Following her re-location to Australia in 2003 she continued to develop her practice and in 2016 commenced further studies in Jewelry and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic.

In 2017 Marika established Studio Lux, a jewelry studio located within the pristine surrounds of Mt Macedon, a rural setting sixty kilometres from the city of Melbourne. From here she produces wearable art pieces that take inspiration from the Australian environment and combine her wide ranging interests and skills.

Marika’s bold designs incorporate traditional jewelry making techniques with non-traditional methods such as crocheting, knitting and weaving. Her works are a unique blend of sculptural form and wearable art often including kinetic or surprise elements.
