Intro
My territory, My identity, is a project of thirteen pieces of textile jewelry inspired by five places in the region of Magallanes - Patagonia - Chile and made with various techniques such as crochet, sewing, barreling, and basket weaving of the original peoples of Patagonia. The exhibition will be online between March 1 and 31 on the Casa Azul de Arte website.

Artist list

Patricia Iglesias
I approach this project by choosing five places in the region of Magallanes (Patagonia). I looked for images to bring them to my memory or to know them, I identified elements that are important to me so that they form part of the visuality of the pieces that allows me to immerse myself in memories and look for information to inquire into the estimation that these sites have; Pali Aike, Sierra Baguales, Monte Tarn, Cerro Mirador and Isla Picton when I start creating the piece.

I elaborate the pieces that will be part of each series putting various materials and techniques in dialogue, using those that were bequeathed to me. While I am finding the answers to some of my questions, I get closer to the memories of other inhabitants of this territory, thus I am connecting and weaving various stories, assembling and sewing, generating voids and spaces to explore and discover, as a metaphor for our coexistence rich in nuances.

/ Patricia Iglesias

My Territory, My Identity: transitory inhabitants
The territory, thus called, can be text and context, a point of convergence or divergence, it could then be concluded that it is a permanent tension node. On the other hand, identity seems to be more of a question than a statement, is identity produced, caused, inherited, imposed...? Is it more individual or collective?

Weave, intertwine, entwine, make present, make visible, in short, a creative process that incorporates various materials and learning together with the inquiry of answers; belonging and identity become language without words in the works of Patricia Iglesias. Geographical points connected by the story of people that they evoke and through that provide a deeper and more intimate tissue, which acquires presence and volume, work of hand and mind that crosses, dares to look, to look at us in fluctuating territories.

The pieces on display call for the journey, the movement of the senses, moving, approaching that other to inhabit it, perhaps incorporate it, consider it in an internal conversation as long and invigorating as a southern sunrise.

Patricia Iglesias. Brooch: Chorlito, 2020. Hemp and jute cord, flat cotton cord, cotton, jute and linen threads, burlap cloth remnants, copper and steel needle.. 17 x 6.5 x 5.5 cm. From series: Aike. Statement for Aike series: Connected with my environment and the place I live in, I weave with materials that refer to remote times and ancestral cultures, those that traveled and inhabited the territory of South America with their own guidelines. I knit slowly, as if I were not in this time, as if I were in a different time; point by point, stitch after stitch, I build spaces, bridges, connections, and voids, like the moments and the pieces of history that we need to intertwine. I weave, sew and patch, in fabrics, cords, and wire structures as a metaphor for the evanescent, everything that we don't give a chance to. Employing joining techniques that protect, arrange and rebuild, I gesture a dialogue with the materials and re-signify them.

Patricia Iglesias. Brooch: Entre los dedos, 2020. Sisal, raffia, jute cord, flat cotton canvas, cotton threads, linen, viscose and jute, bronze and steel needle.. 9 x 7 x 5 cm. Photo by: Pablo Villarroel (piece), Vicente González (model). From series: Danza Ritual. Statement for Danza Ritual series: I knit with my fingers, I choose a material that evokes the sensation that the "coirón" causes me. I use one of the traditional stitches of the original peoples of Patagonia and continue with other fibers and with knitting and sewing stitches learned in the family, using crochet and needle. As I knit, roll, move forward and backward, turn back and continue at another point, like a dance between my fingers; My fabric is my ritual dance, with it I connect the past and the present, I am part of the cultural and family legacy of the territory I inhabit. I knit and sew with a thread, as a metaphor for the fiber of life that comes from our ancestors and the potential with which we are born that allows us to weave and shape our lives.

Patricia Iglesias. Brooch: Visión panorámica, 2020. Acrylic cord, jute cord, cotton, linen, jute and viscose threads, remains of curtain fabric, tulle and crea, bronze, silver, steel needle.. 4.5 x 8.5 x 2.5 cm. From series: Područje. Statement for Područje series: I choose materials and methods that allow me to weave and sew to make structures that go generating a path, which I can roll up and go through in a tactile and visual way. I use laces and pieces of semi-translucent fabric, allowing the threads that I am using to peek out, letting them reveal themselves, I don't want to hide them. Weaving and tying, without letting go, I follow a path. Tensing materials, challenging them, pushing them to the limit to discover their resistance and their essence, as a metaphor for the situations that put us to the test where we discover ourselves and those around us. I see the journey that I travel with my tissue as an image of the stages lived and each component an exploration.

Patricia Iglesias. Brooch: La infancia de los elementos, 2020. Acrylic cord, jute cord, cotton thread, sheep wool, alpaca, acrylic, felt scraps, copper, silver, steel needle.. 13.5 x 7 x 10 cm. From series: La Historia de los Átomos. Statement for La Historia de los Átomos series: I interlace, yew, sew and tie using materials that evoke cold and warm, compact and fluffy, curly and soft: two things at once. I go smoothing and hollowing out the textile, weaving, and sewing, increasing and decreasing the barreled, generating shadows and lights. Developing a dialogue between textile materials and techniques as a metaphor for duality, that which is far from being a synthesis or a mixture, rather the one that comes from living together and inhabiting contradictions without denying one part or the other, “but admitting the permanent struggle in our subjectivity between the Indian and the European”, in the words of Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui.

Patricia Iglesias. Necklace: Shukako, 2020. Jute cord, cotton, linen and jute threads, acrylic wool, textile scraps, garbage bags, leather, non-woven fabric, copper wire.. 84 x 34 x 7.5 cm. Statement: Trying to imagine what fear looks like, I start with the choice of materials, I sense that they must correspond to the same color palette, and I opt for those where I put materials of an antagonistic nature in tension. I intertwine, squeeze, at times sucking the material, squeezing it, and forcing it again. I knit, I link and I sew; protecting, repairing, and rebuilding. I want to reveal my fears, know their truths, and not hide them from me, they say that to let go you must know what you are holding on to. To elaborate on this piece I ask myself what are the limits of fear.
