“I work with color. Sometimes I juxtapose rather risky tones. Why? Maybe because of this climate of ours, the greyness around. Colors add joy to my jewelry.” Valdis Broe solo exhibition.
Artist list
Valdis Broe
Valdis Broe is a Latvian contemporary jewelry artist. He has graduated from the Visual Communication Department at the Art Academy of Latvia , and he has obtained his Master’s degree from Latvian Art Academy, Department of Visual Communication.
He usually works with gold, silver, and different precious and semi-precious stones. The artist’s power is enamel works and his masterful mixing of intense colors in amazing combinations. Compares jewelry art to the process of creating a sculpture. His gold castings stand out with exquisite sense of material and plastic. Works with enamel has been constantly present in Broes art.
“I work with color. Sometimes I juxtapose rather risky tones. Why? Maybe because of this climate of ours, the greyness around. Colors add joy to my jewelry.” Broe’s design can be characterized as surrealistic. “I don‘t create similar items. I like to come up with new ideas all the time. Only some elements, details can look alike in one jewelry collection.”
The designer tells that he has spent a lot of time studying books of anatomy in order to know better the human hand. This knowledge is needed when making two finger rings.
Valdis compares jewelry art to the process of creating a sculpture.
The new personal exhibition “THIN THIN” – this time is an interplay of surfaces. The artist has allocated a considerable amount of space to silver, but not supersaturating the space, only occupying it with different textures. “Tense – as the surface of drums, ready to respond. Doodled - as writing covered paper, ready to give” the exhibition is philosophically explained by the author.
One plane of the jewelry reveals the volume and it’s belonging to the object world by allowing us to see the rings, earrings, necklaces and so on. Astonishment is to be discovered by looking at side surfaces - thin, thin, in perspective creating an endless sense of continuation. Decorative refinement in the jewelry of Valdis Broe is the bearing hinge, which at the same time gives the jewelry a kinetic vibrancy and tenacity.
