(...) With this seminar we hope to enrich discussion of how jewellery is exhibited. The discussion touches on the entire field of design and the seminar is intended for a broad public with an interest in design and crafts. (...)
In the current exhibition at Gustavsbergs Konsthall “Parousia - A new body for the figurine” the way in which the items are presented is a central issue. The exposure of the theme – the gift in a contemporary context – sheds light on a new perspective in a lengthy historical tradition. When Sari Liimatta’s unique sculptural jewellery is presented in Byggstudio’s packaging and showcases new narratives are created both pertaining to the objects that are exhibited and the gift in a historical sense.
With this seminar we hope to enrich discussion of how jewellery is exhibited. The discussion touches on the entire field of design and the seminar is intended for a broad public with an interest in design and crafts. Two keynote speakers have been invited to contribute. Marjan Unger from the Netherlands is an art historian and design critic. She has recently submitted a doctoral dissertation entitled “Jewellery in context. A multi-disciplinary framework for the study of jewellery”. Päivi Ruutiainen, art historian and critic from Finland, will submit her dissertation ”Contemporary Jewellery – the stepsister of Arts or the Declarer” next year. Sari Liimatta will also be attending the seminar to talk about how she works and the ideas underlying her sculptural jewellery. Päivi Ernkvist will talk briefly about the importance of exhibition forms and the background to the exhibition “Parousia - A new body for the figurine” which she initiated and curated.
