Program and online application for The 9th edition of Schmuckdenken - ThinkingJewellery: At the end of progress? Perspectives for action at the end of growth.
At the end of progress? Perspectives for action at the end of growth.

‘SchmuckDenken’ is an attempt to reflect about what jewellery really is.
It concerns an interdisciplinary approach beyond the relevant categories of craft or art, applied or free: the exploration of what jewellery means, not what it looks like. The desire for adornment and jewellery has been an anthropological constant in mankind since the very beginning.

Jewellery is an important cultural asset which has been reinterpreted  time and again in every era.
The post-modern era has turned out to be an apocalyptic complex of crises for many: ecological crisis, financial crisis, justice crisis. In an age of globalization and social division, politicians endlessly repeat the mantra that there is no alternative to their strategies for action, but they are increasingly proving to be ineffective in practice. At the same time, a new regime of the aestheticization of everyday life – not only in fashion or advertising – has come into being which culminates in the self-staging of the individual in the Internet as a substitute for real relationships.

With consideration given to jewellery, SchmuckDenken 9 gathers exemplary analyses and discusses perspectives for action under the aspect of ethical premises.‘SchmuckDenken’ will be continued as part of the Idar-Oberstein Formdiskurs 2014.
