Name of graduation student: Isabel Honey Coles
Name of guiding teachers: Jennifer Gray
Nominated by Edinburgh College of Art
In her graduate showcase ‘Under the Microscope’ Isabel has masterfully harnessed ancient techniques involved with granulation including fusion, which requires meticulous knowledge of metal properties and torch control, to form her own sensitive and incredibly detailed jewellery collection. Inspired by often overlooked microworlds found in nature, her work offers the wearer and onlooker a layered experience of beautiful forms and textures of the macro/zoomed out and micro/zoomed in through her intricately created pieces. This collection is the result of technical and creative innovation and excellence.

The statement of the artist
‘Under the Microscope’ was inspired by the landscape of moss that grows in the walls and cracks of the urban scenery around Edinburgh. Upon examining species of moss and fungi under a microscope, I found beauty in their spherical forms and detailed textures. The use of the ancient technique of granulation is an integral part of my practice, adding material value and an intimate experience for the wearer, as the technique requires a deep understanding of materials and processes.
Granulation, one of the oldest known techniques, is characterised by the use of metallic bonding processes to join granules of precious metal to a substrate of the same metal. Each granule has its own individual identity that works as part of a larger concept. My use of granulation strives to develop the possibilities of this ancient technique in contemporary settings.
