Nüma’s cabinet of curiosity brings together a fascinating range of heterogenous artefacts, reflecting between them the whole spectrum of his scientific and artistic background and his multicultural geographical origins.
Naturalia, Artificiala, Scientifica, Exotica, jewellery objects, instruments of observation, exploration or of curiosity take us through his world, a world made up of items rare, novel or idiosyncratic, hovering between nature and culture, the real and the imaginary, the animal and the vegetable, the chemical and the magical.
The materials are set in growing alum crystals – precise plant patterns spring up along different spatial axes, curved threads of brass weave life into a seashell.
The artefacts are escorted through space and time by a retro-futuristic or post-apocalyptic explorer. The jewellery assumes an ecosystem rich in exchanges and energy. The preciousness of living matter.
/ Sophie Hanagarth et Florence Lehmann
Statement of the artist:
Coming from multiple cultures and origins, from a Congolese father, and a Greek mother, I was born in Noumea in New Caledonia, Kanaky, located in the South Pacific Ocean.
I have stated my studies with a degree in animal and plant biology in Noumea and then joined the National Art Academy of Dijon, where I during the lockdown, self-taught myself in jewelry techniques. Finally, I joined the HEAR of Strasbourg in the jewelry workshop. At the crossroads of these multiple influences, my inspiration draws as much from sciences as from art, like gesture, know-how and customs. A journey through time, space and matter, I wrote an exploration story used as a narrative source for my production. Between sculptural and wearable objects, my creations are part of the world of Art and Contemporary Jewelry by highlighting different physicochemical processes.
I have discovered a new world. Equipped with my exploration tools, I set off towards this unknown place. At first glance, this world is uninhabited and made up mostly of a smooth, malleable and transparent material. Which surprisingly refracts light well, creating dazzling beams of light. With each of my steps, this crystal-clear material is enchanted and in a thousand clicks, it transforms. From a smooth and soft appearance, it becomes opaque and angular, forming conglomerates of crystals. Animal, Plant or Mineral? I took some of these specimens with me to study and enshrine them to preserve and present them to my peers.
