The project of Ziran Zhang, a graduate of our three-year program, demonstrates a remarkable ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary approaches.
In her studies, she has developed excellent technical skill, but also a rare sensitivity and a deep understanding of the mental and emotional processes that influence the creative process.

Statement of the artist:
In this collection of three pieces, I sought to explore the emotional connections between people through the contemporary language of jewellery.
Beyond being mere adornments, jewellery, like any other artwork, has the power to convey stories and preserve memories and emotions. I aimed to encapsulate precious experiences of others within the jewellery I created, and then to return these pieces to their owners, thus completing an emotional interaction between myself, the narrator, and their past.

I come from a school renowned for its excellence in goldsmithing, where I learned many traditional and contemporary techniques for working with metals. For this project, I exchanged my skills with those of others, receiving in return their cherished memories and symbolic objects from their past. I listened to intimate stories, experienced deep emotions, and collected objects of great personal significance. This process, akin to a social experiment, fascinated me deeply.

The items I was given were often fragments of loved ones or lost possessions: a button, a few hairs, an old photograph, or a worn-out watch. I combined these fragments with metals and other materials such as plastic and cotton thread, giving concrete form to these memories. In the end, the narrators received a tangible materialisation of their memories and affection, while I received their emotions and the unique experience of this creative process.
I selected three objects to create three corresponding pieces of jewellery. Each one is linked to a specific memory:

  • the deceased grandmother;
  • the parental love;
  • The life memories.

The first piece is a folding ring, like a book that tells the story of the grandmother's life. Inside, there is a photograph of her and a representation of the house where she lived, with embroidered chairs to recreate the details of that scene. The second piece is a bracelet containing a jade Buddha statue, given to the narrator's parents when she was a child and worn for over ten years, symbolizing the deep bond with her parents. When the bracelet is closed, the Buddha is hidden. The transformation of the statue from pendant to hidden symbol reflects the emotional evolution of its owner, from explicit sentiment to introspection. The third piece is a brooch with coloured buttons. The buttons belong to a person who, after going through difficult times during their studies, was invited to participate in an art activity on the theme of recycling. At the end of the event, they received these buttons made from scrap materials. The emotion felt by the narrator upon receiving these buttons was complex: a fragile heart found comfort in these objects, like the vibrating titanium strip on the brooch that transitions from trembling to calm.
