Andrea Ortiz

Bio

Andrea Ortiz is a New York–based jewelry artist and designer whose practice explores the intersection of materiality, ritual, and contemporary adornment. She holds an MFA in Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

Drawing from traditional jewelry techniques, Ortiz combines precious metals and gemstones with unconventional everyday materials to challenge conventional notions of value and wearability. Her work reconsiders ordinary objects, materials, and daily rituals through the lens of jewelry, revealing the quiet mysticism embedded in everyday life and inviting viewers to experience adornment as a multisensory act.

Her work has been exhibited at NYC Jewelry Week, Design Miami, the American Craft Council, Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace at the President Woodrow Wilson House in Washington, D.C., and in NYFW in collaboration with fashion designer Max Alexander.
Ortiz is the recipient of an International Design Awards (IDA) Silver Award, and her work has been recognized by Art Jewelry Forum and SCAD for her outstanding MFA collection.

Statement

Linking Realms is a body of work inspired by the contemporary ritual of drinking coffee. Here, coffee is transformed from a commodity into a symbol of connection, identity, and shared experience. Through jewelry, the coffee bean transcends its physical form, becoming a conduit for memory, the senses, and the invisible networks that bind people across cultures and generations.

Each bean carries layered meanings: the land that nurtures it, the hands that cultivate and harvest it, the rituals of preparing and sharing it, and the identities shaped through its history. Though small in scale, the coffee bean holds immense symbolic weight, becoming a vessel for heritage, labor, nourishment, migration, and place.

At the heart of Ortiz's practice is an interest in the unseen. She explores absence through techniques that draw attention to negative space—to what remains after the coffee has been consumed: the lingering aroma, the warmth of the cup, the tactile memory of holding it, the quiet presence of an empty vessel. For Ortiz, these traces mirror the relationships that cannot be seen yet are profoundly felt.

By elevating coffee to the status of jewelry, Linking Realms proposes an alternative understanding of preciousness—one measured not by rarity or material value, but by connection, ancestry, collective memory, and the enduring bonds forged through everyday rituals.
