Statement
As a jewellery designer, Eva Fernandez explores how her wearable pieces and objects can heighten our awareness of the ordinary and man-made environment, stimulating curiosity and our perception of the world. Fernandez draws inspiration from her surroundings, recontextualizing familiar objects to convey social and political narratives. An underlying aim in her work is the questioning of preciousness in jewellery and beyond, which is assisted by her use of low value or unconventional materials. She blends digital technology with handcrafting techniques, merging her engineering background with her traditional upbringing in rural Spain. The work of Eva Fernandez Martos is both playful and sharp. As a mechanical engineer turned studio jeweller it is clear to see a sense of technical proficiency and construction. Combining technological processes and traditional hand processes Fernandez references classical jewellery forms and archetypes with a playful twist. Somehow leaving the viewer with something familiar and something to consider.
