The catalogue illustrates the works selected by Caroline Broadhead, winner of the Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2022. She chose 66 pieces now on view from 650 entries, and in her statement explains the reasons behind her selections.
The special show “Schmuck/Jewellery” defines its purpose as finding and recording new develop- ments in the field of the gold- and silversmith’s art. Yet its history memorably shows how design and culture have changed over the decades. Je- wellery has become a microcosm whose denizens reflect these changes on a small scale. When we review the pieces submitted for the show, their formal and artisanal features are no longer suf- ficient to judge them. And though the concepts of ring, bracelet, necklace and brooch still refer to a functional level, they often serve to convey a social, political, or personal message. This is something jewellery has always done, if not with such a complexity of potentials as we see today.
In short, the special show “Schmuck” has since become one of the most exciting fields we could ever hope to work in. In this regard we are grate- ful to see the worldwide development the com- petition has gone through, what this show has come to mean at the International Trades Fair, and how the entire city of Munich has profited from it, and utlimately how important Germany has become on an international basis in the field of jewellery, and especially regarding initial and advanced training.
In 2023, too, it will be underway, this time to Valencia, Spain. This will be the second time it was displayed there. From March 30 to April 30, 2023, “Schmuck” will make a guest appearance at the city’s museum for contemporary art, Cen- ter del Carme Cultura Contemporània.
