This outstanding jewelry collection of the Cologne Museum of Applied Arts (MAKK) is showcased for the first time in a dedicated exhibition.

Featuring cross-epochal and cross-cultural themes, the exhibition successfully presents diverse approaches to the art of jewelry-making. The photographs of around 370 objects and the accompanying descriptions demonstrate just how multifaceted jewelry design is. The social, societal, emotional, and symbolic aspects of jewelry are also evaluated and discussed in an essay by Beatriz Chadour-Sampson. The MAKK’s jewelry collection of around 1,600 works spans a period of 7,000 years: from ancient oriental gems from the 5th millennium BC to contemporary jewelry. This is what makes this collection so unique and diverse.
The publication is divided into 28 subject areas and in this way combines chronological and cultural cross-door content. At the same time, the structural ture individual access to the diverse areas of the jewelry art. The images of the individual objects Concise accompanying texts are included. They lead into the the multifaceted nature of jewelry design Insights into the societal, social, emotional len and symbolic aspects of jewelry - for example as Expression of status and luxury or as a medium for Dealing with current topics such as Gender and identity. Beatriz Chadour-Sampson goes into detail essay introduces the history of the collection using the example of selected objects and paintings art and cultural historical development jewelry. The comprehensive bibliography and a personal register make the book one both practical and aesthetic reference work for experts and jewelry lovers.
