Kat Bracco

Bio

Kat Bracco makes jewellery and small object works in Brisbane, Australia. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in aeolian geomorphology, a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in Environmental Science and is currently studying a Master of Visual Arts at the Queensland College of Art and Design at Griffith University. She is interested in the communication of scientific issues and challenges via jewellery and small object works and sustainability and recycling of materials. She is an emergent artist and is launching her journey in exhibitions and awards, having recently featured in the We Are Snag Anthology Edition 5 (Winner (Tie) for Best Use of Nature).
 

Statement

Kat Bracco is a metalsmith, scientist, collector and bowerbird at heart. Her work explores the impact of human development on the environment, ecosystems, geological structures, soils and the atmosphere. Works include wearable art pieces as well as smaller object works. Recycled and recovered mixed metals are utilised. Found objects including natural rocks, minerals and materials are incorporated within these forms, as well as discarded items including plastics, glass and electrical items, reflecting the importance of the environment and cradle-to-cradle technologies. Bracco’s objective is to introduce you to the Australian environment, to learn about objects found and the places where they have been uncovered. The collection, souvenir, memory and mourning of lost native species are central themes in her work, conveyed utilising a narrative jewellery lens. She aims to encourage audiences to consider the preservation and conservation of the natural environment for future generations through her artistic practice.
