Lien De Clercq

Bio

Lien De Clercq is a jewellery artist and maker based in Antwerp, Belgium. She holds a Master’s degree in Jewellery Design and Silversmithing from Sint-Lucas Antwerp, complemented by technical training at Technicum Antwerp, and later obtained an Educational Master in Visual Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. She has over twenty years of professional experience working in the jewellery field and currently combines her own artistic practice with teaching jewellery techniques and wax modelling. Her work is represented by Pont & Plas in Ghent, Belgium, and is regularly featured in jewellery exhibitions.

Statement

Looking for composition is the core of my work. I find inspiration in the urban environment, observing architectural details, lines, structures, patterns and the unexpected compositions that emerge within the city. Photography allows me to isolate these fragments from their surroundings and to look at them from different perspectives: different views of the same horizon.

In my studio, these observations are translated into jewellery, primarily brooches. I work intuitively, building, rearranging and taking compositions apart until lines, shapes, volumes and materials find their balance. This continuous process of looking and relooking reflects the ever-changing character of the city itself, where familiar structures can reveal something entirely new depending on where you stand.
