The Jewelry Design & Goldsmithing department of Sint Lucas Antwerpen approaches jewelry from the perspective of the relation between the individual and the object. Jewels are not only worn for their decorative qualities but also express how people give shape to their lives. A jewel can function as a social sign, as an expression of human vanity, as a repository of personal memories, or as an artistic means for the maker.
Conceptual
Jewellery is your artistic medium through which you communicate about identity and the body, about consumption and power. The extraction of raw material, dealing with conflict materials and waste streams can be the subject of a master's project. Although more personal themes such as keepsakes, celebrations or loss and rituals are also relevant. The relationship between body adornment and identity or the emotional value that a piece of jewellery carries when it is passed on from generation to generation, are all examples that are interesting to work with.
Methodological
You start by collecting various information that sparks your imagination. This is done in diverse ways and based on your own interests; for example, by reading about a particular topic or by working with materials, drawing, conducting interviews, studying crafts or visiting exhibitions. Research therefore functions as a source of inspiration to independently start your own working process. Depending on your theme, you fully experiment with materials and techniques and formulate your own artistic response to its content.
Multidisciplinary
We carefully consider the presentation of your work and in which context you position it; whether that is a gallery, with a critical artists' collective or in a clothing shop… this is up to you. How and where you present your work in the world determines which other media you might need. That is why the design process, which can include drawings, photographs, or video often becomes part of the presentation of your master's project. This provides insight into your working methods; it helps to share your artistic vision and communicate with an audience.
Professional
In the third year, you will prepare an internship abroad at an institution, gallery or museum, where you will be part of a team for several months after your master graduation. This gives you insight into specific professional contexts for your own work, which initiatives you can start yourself and which organizational aspects are involved in this. Additionally, you build an international network that is necessary to establish connections within the niche of contemporary jewellery and further develop your own artistic practice.
