I am drawn to dry connections, to functional elements that become protagonists, to objects that have no hierarchy between their sides. Every clasp is visible. No side remains a back.

Bio

Madalina Suhar is an Italian interior designer and jewellery artist based in Krefeld, Germany. She studied Industrial Design at the Politecnico di Milano and goldsmithing at the Scuola Orafa Ambrosiana in Milan, and has deepened her jewellery practice through workshops with Katja Korsawe in Düsseldorf and Judy McCaig in Brussels. Her work combines non-traditional materials such as paper, leather, and coral with silver and brass, exploring the tension between fragility and structure.

Statement

My work grows from a tenderness towards the weak and fragile side of things, towards materials that carry memory and imperfection, such as paper, leather, coral. Coming from a background in interior design and exhibition architecture, I bring to jewellery a spatial and structural way of thinking. I am drawn to dry connections, to functional elements that become protagonists, to objects that have no hierarchy between their sides. Every clasp is visible. No side remains a back.

For the series O_O, born from samples of Japanese paper kept since 2006 and from a work trip to Japan in 2008, the inspiration came from the jellyfish, fragile and yet structured, soft and precise. The necklace has two sides, one minimal and one colourful. No back. Every side deserves to be seen.
