Sara Chyan graduated from the renowned Royal College of Art’s M.A. Jewellery & Metal, London, in 2017. Sara is now based in London and has established an eponymous jewellery brand.
Statement
Sara reckons jewellery is an object that carries more than just an intrinsic significance, for it is not merely an ornament but also a medium for expressing one’s individuality. Her works adopt a minimalistic and conceptual approach; she draws on a wide range of subjects in a multi-layered manner and likes to involve the viewer in a way that is physical at times. She believes in the notion that her works respond directly to the human body and the surrounding environment, and how the wearer engages with it is integral to her art form. As an artist, Sara’s everyday experiences and activities serve as a starting point for her creations.
Temperature plays a significant role in her graduation project. She explores the unique temperature-aware colour and geometric shapes of bismuth to create stunning one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces. This project is inspired by her obsession with heat, exploring the possibility of using temperature to assess one’s emotional state. Bismuth is a rare low-melting metal that commonly used in fire detection systems, electrical fuses, stomach medicines, cosmetics and pigments and bullets. The oxidation of bismuth is spectacular, where natural crystalised forms and colours can tell us the temperature. One colour represents one temperature, so it makes each piece exceptional.
Sara founded her studio in 2018 based on this project she began while studying for her Master. The project has already won numerous international awards and has featured in several high-profile magazines.
