The first monograph of Mia Maljojoki presents the Finnish jewellery artist’s oeuvre of the last twenty years – a book that, thanks to the numerous atmospheric photographs, turns the interplay between jewellery and wearer into a visual adventure.
Mia Maljojoki (b. 1970) speaks passionately about the emotional potential of her jewelllery. In her works, she wants to capture the moment, make feelings permanent and trigger social interaction. But her pendants and neckpieces, in which filigree porcelain clashes with neon textiles, are never over-ornate, instead they show a playful lightness.
The jewellery artist’s work from the last twenty years is presented in eight series. Subjective pictures of the objects evince the materiality and techniques with which she works; photos of performances and exhibitions examine the jewellery from subjective perspectives. And the models set against the atmospheric Finnish landscape bring to life thintimate relationship between jewellery and wearer, as seen in the Exactly series. For the artist one thing is certain: jewellery begins and ends with the body.
Mia Maljojoki’s book is a ‘journey through the creative process’, reflecting all stages of artistic production – from concept and development to the completion of a piece of jewellery, an installation, performance or exhibition.
