Intro
Galleri Smedjan presents Bländverk, a solo exhibition by jewellery artist Åsa Christensson. The artist works with themes related to science and perception - how science explains reality and how we, in fact, perceive it through our senses.

Science can clarify phenomena and, over time, influence and reshape our understanding of how the world works. At the same time, a distance emerges between our everyday human experience and the new, elusive findings and theories that research presents.

Is the complexity of the world truly possible to grasp through science alone? The exhibition’s title, Bländverk (roughly translated as “illusion” or “deceptive appearance”), suggests a kind of delusion, but where does it reside? Is it our senses that deceive us, science that reaches too far, or the vastness of the universe that escapes our understanding? / Åsa Christensson

Christensson has developed a technique in which she assembles strips of thin wood veneer to create pieces that are flat yet convey an illusion of volume. It is a meticulous process: the veneer is moistened, bent, and glued, with each work built up layer by layer. The pieces are characterised by a sense of force, speed, and movement. The artist sees them as illustrations of the meeting between our inner reality and the image of the world constructed by science. The illusion of three-dimensionality becomes an expression of how things may not always be as they first appear.

Opening reception: Saturday April 25th, 12:00–16:00 h.

The exhibition is supported by the Swedish Arts Council and Region Jämtland Härjedalen.
