Artist list
Claire Lavendhomme
Claire Lavendhomme is one of those spirits who heal through their presence, who transmit; one of those whose creations translate the meanderings of thought with the utmost simplicity. Intimate. Universal.
Through this retrospective, the association pays tribute to this artisan artist by promoting an image worthy of her and the work she has accomplished so far.
The exhibition traces the work of Claire Lavendhomme, a multidisciplinary artist and jewellery designer, from her early explorations to her current work, after twenty years of membership in the association. She loves stories that belong to no one and have existed since the dawn of time. Modest and introverted, her work pays tribute to the archetype, whether in form, idea or material. It is a work of observation and scientific, historical or personal research, mixed with chance encounters and a deep conviction – that of a great house occupied by all the arts, including jewellery, which is vital.
Claire Lavendhomme invites Antonino Spoto, ceramist and member of BeCraft.

THE CONCEPT OF RETROSPECTIVES
Driven by the goal of passing on and preserving expertise, and mandated by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to promote artists from these regions, BeCraft has been developing a cycle of biennial exhibitions since 2021, showcasing contemporary applied arts from French-speaking Belgium through a retrospective of the work of one of its member artists.
This type of exhibition allows visitors to embrace an artist’s creation and take a contemplative break to better understand their world.
Claire Lavendhomme, jewellery artist, following retrospectives of ceramicist Thérèse Lebrun and jewellery designer Cécile Bertrand, joins this cycle rich in discoveries by presenting her expert jewellery work, from her earliest creations to her most recent ones.
I like the idea that jewellery travels with the person wearing it.
That its base is the body...
That it conveys intimacy, colour, poetry, emptiness, sensuality, emotion, connection, silence, sensitivity, hatred, love, cries, life, death, speech, laughter, art... And that it invites dialogue.
/ Claire Lavendhomme
Born in 1959, Claire Lavendhomme has pursued a multidisciplinary career path. A jewellery artist, she also practises drawing, poetry and art in general.
She trained while teaching classical and contemporary jewellery techniques at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Arlon and at the Institut de la Parure et de la Bijouterie Jeanne Toussaint (Brussels) with Thierry Bontridder. With a wealth of experience gained through internships (notably with Ramon Puig Cuyas and Christoph Zellweger) and multidisciplinary teaching in various academies and with disadvantaged young people, Claire Lavendhomme made a name for herself on the contemporary jewellery art scene in the late 1990s.
Her work has been exhibited in Europe, the USA, China, Japan and Mexico, and today remains in the collections of around a hundred private individuals around the world.
Through her traditional craftsmanship and transdisciplinary vision of art, Claire Lavendhomme contributes to conveying a holistic view of jewellery, seeing it as "a large house with specific features", in line with the principles of the Bauhaus.
THE INVITATION TO ANTONINO SPOTO
Because BeCraft promotes the exchange of expertise, dialogue and artistic emulation, the featured artist is asked to invite another member of the association to take part in their retrospective exhibition. Claire Lavendhomme chose to collaborate with ceramicist Antonino Spoto. For the occasion, they are giving tangible form to their creative union with a unique presentation of joint works. Together and individually, their creations open a sensitive window onto the self, the other and the world. Imbued with something – but what? – they are moving in their monumental minimalism and archetypal forms. Of apparent simplicity.
Antonino Spoto’s sculptures invite contemplation, almost sacred in nature. His work speaks of interiority. Its uniqueness lies in its velvety appearance which, applied to a perfectly turned hieratic form, complicates the rational perception of volume. The final sculpture appears to levitate, timeless.
After graduating in ceramics from the Academy of Fine Arts in Charleroi in 2006, Antonino Spoto honed his craft alongside Antonio Lampecco from 2001 to 2008. Today, his work is included in the private collections of Frank Steyaert, Sofie Lachaert & Luc d’Hanis and the public collections of the Yingge County Museum in New Taipei City (Taiwan) and the Ariana Museum in Geneva (Switzerland).
THE BOOK
The book looks back on more than forty years of creation, showcasing a visual language that is both rigorous and deeply personal. Through colour, light, material and movement, Claire Lavendhomme develops a sensitive approach to jewellery as an object of connection, thought and presence. Critical texts, essays and interviews intertwine to paint a multifaceted portrait of the artist. Contributions from Gaëlle Clark, curator, Ornella La Vaccara, art historian and co-director of BeCraft, Chloé Noyon, jewellery designer, composer Pierre Relaño, and Céline Robin, artistic director and exhibition curator of the Robert Mazlo Endowment Fund for Contemporary Art and Jewellery in Paris, offer complementary perspectives on her practice: poetic insight, aesthetic analysis, philosophical approach and biographical narrative make up a rich and embodied body of work.
The book is available at your local bookshop, at the BeCraft gallery and on the Prisme Éditions website.
