Fragments of the Future brings together a selection of jewellery and ceramic works spanning more than four decades. The exhibition explores how the past continues to shape our understanding of the present and our imagination of the future, creating a dialogue between nature and culture, history and contemporaneity.

Born in South Africa in 1951 and raised on a farm in Namibia, Kruger studied goldsmithing, graphic design, painting and sculpture in South Africa before continuing his education under Hermann Jünger at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. This multidisciplinary background has shaped a practice that moves freely between jewellery, ceramics and the decorative arts.

Kruger combines natural forms, historical artefacts, cultural references and personal experience in richly layered compositions. Precious metals, gemstones and pearls may appear alongside glass, textiles, pigments, seeds and found objects. Rather than establishing a fixed hierarchy between materials, he gives familiar things unexpected meanings through new relationships of colour, form and context. 

Kruger once described the landscape of southern Namibia as: a spiritual space outside of time. Time in his work likewise appears layered rather than linear. Circles, pairs, radial structures, repeated marks, colour and texture recur across decades, yet they never return unchanged. Earlier and recent works meet in the exhibition as parts of a living constellation.

Jewellery has a dual existence in Kruger’s practice. It can be contemplated as an autonomous object, yet its intended place is also the body. Made to be worn, touched and carried, it acquires further meanings through movement, use and contact with others. Many of the works remain untitled, leaving viewers free to engage directly with their materials, forms and associations.

Fragments of the Future presents neither the past as a closed archive nor the future as a promise of novelty. Its fragments are active carriers of time, skill, memory and possibility. Here, things carry on not by remaining unchanged, but by entering new constellations.

Daniel Kruger’s work is held in major museum collections worldwide. Fragments of the Future is his first solo exhibition in Helsinki.
