Between 2nd September and 15th October Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein presents the works of Clemens Oppenheimer and Petra Graf-Mennecken.
Clemens Oppenheimer
Furniture: Visual character and function
'My interest is in the design of furniture with the help of pictorial strategies. The furniture parts are created and arranged in such a way that they interact. In this way, divisions, rotations and penetrations become visible. Floors are seen striving apart and coming together again. The tilting or twisting of an internal form becomes apparent. Empty spaces and added elements demand the restoration of order. Individual elements rest against each other and at the same time strive to enclose them. Mostly, then, it is an intentional movement that can be traced.
My way of working has so far been mainly characterised by systematic and serial aspects. From one type of furniture with a fixed format, so many variations of a design idea were realised until the theme was exhausted. A few years ago, the strict and systematic approach was increasingly abandoned in favour of a freer formal language. It also seemed more suitable for designing large areas. The pictorial element remained and shifted from the edge to the surface.
The design of large furniture fronts is not only an interesting challenge for artisans, but also an opportunity to work out solutions that meet the needs. Material and construction are subordinate to the visual effect and the practical use. The latter remains the decisive criterion, even with all the striving for beauty and significance: the utility value of a piece of furniture.'

Embassy of FancyWork
'As a qualified graphic designer and art director in advertising agencies, I founded my studio for the finest handmade bags in Munich 22 years ago. For the past 2 years, I have concentrated my work in Landsberg am Lech on the theme "Embassy of FancyWork". This means that the focus of my work is on designing fabrics in a variety of colour combinations and patterns and finishing them with traditional techniques from quilting. The gathers that are made at the end thus result in the typical FancyBag style. You can now discover my latest work in the portrait in the shop.'
