Patina Gallery is thrilled to kick off the new year with a curated exhibition, prepared by our cofounder Alison Barnett. For you, she introduced a new curation featuring the jewelry of gallery artist Biba Schutz.
Schutz began her artistic career in printmaking and graphic design. She took a break to travel, only to return to her beloved New York City, where she spent much of her early years. She has since made a home in the city, creating one-of-a-kind collections of art jewelry, in the place where she says best fuels her soul. In her urban environment, the artist creates unforgettable necklaces and earrings for Patina.
During routine walks through the concrete jungle and drives in and outside the city, Schutz takes the time to consider both the intimate nuances and the sheer scale of this vertical world.
In her jewelry, the artist captures the dynamism of the city. With a palette of oxidized sterling silver, she composes works imbued with discerning treatment in texture, form, and space. Materials including silver, bronze, and even mica are forged, soldered, and hammered together. Through these means, the artist creates shapely expressions inspired by these moments around New York.
Every detail in her surroundings that interests her is put into design, from subtle to overt beauty. This could include the soft shades of shadow and scenes of weeds breaking through cracks in the asphalt, or the sheer grandness of skyscrapers, stations, vehicles, and more.
I am attracted to the challenge of materials & processes to create work that investigates the body. Through the structure of jewelry & adornment, I want to tease our senses, create awareness of our bodies, and encourage communication.
My jewelry is influences by history, my memory, experiences, and environment. My environment is urban - In the city of glass & concrete I explore space, shadows, and nature. I am an observer - Walking & public transportation are my library.
