Intro
The series of Design interviews, arising out of a collaboration between the Museo Alessi and the publishers Corraini, allow five of the great names of Italian design to express themselves on their design conception and their career as a designer. (...)
“Architecture is not the art of building, it is a very complex discipline, interpreting history, technology, and, the changes in society.”
Andrea Branzi

“We should also focus on being ironic, like Jacques Tati was, and also not being so strict with design, take society as it is...”
Achille Castiglioni

“My work probably resembles my life. It is labyrinthine, an endless search, with continuous comings and goings. I retrace my steps, working on bits and pieces and getting results that are chequered like Arlecchino’s costume.”
Alessandro Mendini

“For me, form is a consequence of the inner life which an object must have.”
Richard Sapper

“Today I call myself a theoretical designer; just as there are theoretical physicists who think about physics. They don’t make plans for getting to the moon. They think about what sort of physical laws a person going to the moon may encounter.”
Ettore Sottsass

The series of DESIGN INTERVIEWS, arising out of a collaboration between the Museo Alessi and the publishers Corraini, allow five of the great names of Italian design to express themselves on their design conception and their career as a designer. Achille Castiglioni, Andrea Branzi, Alessandro Mendini, Richard Sapper and Ettore Sottsass address themselves to the interviews with sensitivity, intelligence and rigour. In each of the five films one finds brief conversations, reflections on their childhood, their ideals.

Alessi: each of them will thus be presented via a selection of creations from the Alessi Archives, based in Crusinello, above the factories. Studies, research into materials and other unrealised projects document this presentation of each of these major designers from the second half of the 20th century.

The Italian firm Zanotta is kindly making their “Sacco” bean-bag chairs available so that visitors can watch the interviews in comfort.

The interviews were written and produced by Anna Pitscheider.
