Intro
The theme of the exhibition, “Blank Space” is considered to be the Japanese art concept of emptiness or Ma (間, negative space). The theme was chosen to present the work of three Japanese female jewelers who have acquired unique artistic expression through their educational experiences and integration into foreign cultures.

Ma is based on the sensitivity of particular beauty, which, at some point in history, influenced Western art. Not only in the artistic domain, in apanese society Ma is appreciated as a necessary factor of the whole. It brings simplicity, tranquillity, and a delicate balance between existence and nothingness. Ma is neither black nor white - it blurs the borderline of the matters that exist in space.

The three artists' creation is not limited to jewellery, but they also work on small objects to interrelate with physical and intangible spaces. They aim to create a new artistic link between the East and the West through their own experiences and points of view.

Misato Takahashi
We are flooded by information and hectic schedules in this society nowadays. Everything is speeding up and we are not allowed to take a deep breath, a moment of tranquillity. My interest is to create a magical space to transport people's minds to another parallel dimension, so they can get away from everyday life -just like Alice fell into a rabbit hole. I would like to invite viewers into this little world of imagination, a dreamlike wonderland filled with strange creatures to free their minds and thoughts from the buzz around them.

Natsumi Kaihara
I consider the theme of the exhibition, “ Blank Space,” as a resumption, the beginning of an action; in front of a blank sheet of paper with a paintbrush in hand.We value the first step very much. But it is the calm interval, just before the action, that really propels us to the first movement. For me, this border between pause and action is sacred.
I try to capture this moment and invite everyone to have a paintbrush in hand in front of a blank sheet of paper and feel this border.

Yuko Yamada
I like nature and natural things... I am inspired by the shape, texture and colours of trees, plants and flowers. Trees represent uniqueness and natural beauty, for me, it is very symbolic. Through my work, I want to convey the strength and the cry of life despite environmental destruction and global warming.

Opening: 26th September, 19:00 h.
