Exempla 2023 will focus on the craft of boats and shipbuilding. This craft still exerts a great fascination on young people today. Ships are a thoroughly positive symbol. They are widely used for sports and recreational purposes, and their often elegant design and high-quality materials are captivating.
In recent years, partly due to the Corona pandemic, sailing and the use of boats on inland waters have experienced a real boom. As organisers of the Exempla, we also see this as a sign of the high topicality of this craft. For example, the construction of electric boats has skyrocketed in recent years, almost pushing boat builders to the limits of their capacity. Among other things, new safety-related skills are required here, which can only be taught through professional training. Similar to the automobile, however, historic or vintage ships are also in great demand in boatbuilding. Regularly maintained and renovated boats can live to be over 100 years old.
This is proven by the countless fantastically maintained classics on many lakes and oceans. In this context, the repair or restoration of older, valuable ship models is becoming increasingly important for the craft of boat builders. In this way, they also contribute to the preservation of a cultural expression of sailing and boating, as it led to a boom in sailing and boating sports, especially from the 1920s onwards, through the development of classic boat types such as the legendary dragons or Riva boats. The topicality of water sports with boats is also expressed in major international sports competitions.
Last but not least, the great success of German rowers and canoeists at the European Athletics Championships 2022 in Munich can be mentioned here, which has given this sport a great deal of publicity and attention.
Exempla 2023 aims to use living workshops to illustrate the job profile of the boat builder and to draw attention to the wide range of facets of this specialised craft. The Exempla will illustrate the construction of various types of boats from German regions. The spectrum ranges from small rowing boats and flatboats, which are still in use on rivers today, to classic sailing boats and the latest electric boats. From the field of recreational boat building, canoes and rowers will be presented and the special requirements for these types of vessels will be explained. Examples of the boat-building craft from Austria, France and Scandinavia will provide an international component within the special show Exempla. Ethnographic contributions will present the living workshops of a boatbuilder from Siberia who makes traditional canoes from birch bark. As a hunting boat, the kayak was the basis of subsistence under Arctic conditions. Its history of development goes back well over 4000 years. In an unusual way, the highest functionality of this boat is followed by an extremely aesthetic design, which is typical for boat building.
In addition to pure boatbuilding, which will focus on the classically used woods, the Exempla will also show further developments in this craft with the use of the latest materials, propulsion technologies, the use of solar energy and sustainable care, maintenance and repair of boats. The image of boat builders is complemented by crafts such as sail and tarpaulin makers, rope makers, manufacturers of rigging, propulsion screws and nautical precision instruments.
