EXEMPLA münchen 2025 is dedicated to the World of the Stage and shows the indispensable role of craftsmanship in the performing arts. From 12 to 16 March 2025, visitors of the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich will experience first-hand how stage sets, costumes and masks are created. They can watch the craftspeople at work in living workshops. EXEMPLA showcases the creative combination of traditional craftsmanship, design and technology.
EXEMPLA is the largest special show at Handwerk & Design in Munich.
The special show EXEMPLA münchen, which takes place from 12 to 16 March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse, is entirely dedicated to the theme World of the Stage. This year, the invaluable importance of craftsmanship in the performing arts takes centre stage. Whether theatre or opera, every performance is the result of an intensive creative process in which craftspeople play a key role in creating the magical world of the stage. The special show shows how crucial craftsmanship is for the realisation of the most diverse artistic visions.
Visitors to EXEMPLA münchen go on a journey of discovery behind the scenes in the living workshops: How are stages and sets built? What technology is needed to move and stage the breathtaking backdrops? How are costumes and masks created that transform performers into their roles? The "world of the stage" is illuminated from various perspectives at EXEMPLA münchen.
What makes a venue a stage and what technical and acoustic requirements are associated with stage construction are presented in the "Stage as a structure" section by outstanding projects such as the acoustic models by Georg Ackermann GmbH, the stage constructions by Bühnenbau Wertheim and the electrical engineering and control systems by Zeiger-Technik GmbH. Visitors can admire stage history and architecture with virtual exhibits from the Deutsches Theatermuseum and the Deutsche Theatertechnische Gesellschaft.
In the Stage Design and Scenery area, experts from the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Kammerspiele show how they create inspiring stage sets with precise craftsmanship. Marionette and paper theatre, also part of the special show, offer an intimate look at the delicate craftsmanship involved in smaller stage formats.
In the Costume and Make-up area, visitors can experience at first hand how garments and masks are made that enable performers to embody their stage roles. Guests include the Accademia Teatro alba Scala, the August Everding Theatre Academy and the technical school for costume makers. In addition, four internationally renowned mask artists such as Kitazawa Hideta, a master of the Japanese NOH mask carving art, or the jewellery artist Rasa Vifcinskaite, how she makes her very different masks.
Franz Xaver Peteranderl, President of the Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria, emphasises:
With the Internationale Handwerksmesse and EXEMPLA münchen special show, we are once again putting special aspects of the work of the skilled crafts sector in the spotlight in 2025. At the Munich trade fair stand, we will show just how versatile our industry is. Crafts and arts are inextricably linked on and behind the stage. With EXEMPLA, we are making it clear that the magic on stage can only be experienced by the audience through the skills of the craftspeople.
As organisers, we are particularly pleased that the curators Barbara Schmidt and Michael Härteis are committed to making EXEMPLA münchen 2025 accessible. Old exhibition positions will be accessible via ramps. In addition, a mediation programme is being planned that will also create suitable offers for people with hearing and visual impairments, says Dieter Dohr, CEO and President of GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.
Thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), EXEMPLA münchen 2025 is able to realise this diverse and fascinating exhibition.
