Organized by Ruddy Metal Studio and Toback, the exhibition is about new ideas of food, tableware, utensils, accessories and performance art. It tries to break the boundaries between the exhibition, exhibits and viewers, to get rid of the stereotype of an exhibition that the audience has to keep distance and be quiet. The opening ceremony is presented as a performance.
Artist list
Yonghui Duan, Peixi Miao, Valen, YDMD, Yujia Yao, Zhongjin Zhang, Xiari Zheng, Lite Zhu
In the context of post epidemic era, the change itself and the maintenance of the status quo seem to have reached a kind of self-consistency. A lot of things happen out of thin air, and there is a connection between them. Such as, Xie Yu said that he did not want to return the JUJU to us, and on December 5, we will hold the opening ceremony of a decoration banquet called "experiment” in ToBack. Outwardly, the two things are not much related. But in fact, JUJU, the beloved kitty of one of our co-curators, is left behind at home of curator’s friend in New York as the epidemic situation, so its loveliness is nowhere to hide, and become the target.
OK, so what RMS and Toback are doing is, on December 5, 2020, we will hold an exhibition on food, about tableware, about utensils, about accessories, and about performance art. It will be born in a chaotic and absurd scene in order.
When talking about exhibitions, it seems to be quiet and far away. We want to break the boundaries, no matter the form of exhibition or the exhibits themselves, strive to be closer to and integrate into the world of observers.
The opening ceremony is presented as a performance. Through the performance, we explore "how can we give up the using stereotype when the utensils (tableware) change their traditional forms."
When we are trapped in this space if everything in front of us is just like this. Who is the creator? Who is the communicator? Who is the receiver? There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes? Or are they all matrix codes in the same format? We will use exhibits to bring you immersive experience through visual senses. When we break the boundary and start to explore the root of everything, no matter the result is to change or maintain, it may no longer be important because you are not only a spectator anymore...
We provide desserts and afternoon tea for exhibits. The supporting catering of "experiment" banquet is designed and produced by desserts graduated from the New Zealand branch of French blue belt cuisine school. In this exhibition, all the exhibits and desserts are usable and edible.
Whether to participate is a decision, a decision itself, or a change. Under the background of the epidemic era, many things began to happen out of thin air. For example, Xie Yu said that he did not want to return the JUJU to us. For example, on December 5, you might have participated in it.
Opening: 4 Dec 2020, at 7 pm.

Materials, functions, technologies and meanings encountering, they make unexpected expectations. Their works are filled with combination, critical thinking, humors and speculation. Traditional materials and crafts are post positioned as secondary tools for concepts here, while the functionality of objects become ‘jokes’, letting their works filled the possibilities of the future of craft with fantastic ideas. Interdisciplinary backgrounds endow YDMD with creative and surprising approaches to making. They solve problems in the meantime of making new ones. They are interested in both highly experimental artistic explorations and the exciting potentials hidden in industries and social rules. YDMD studio is active in the domestic and international stage, and his works have won two British goldsmiths craft and Design Association Awards. He has participated in London Design Week for many times and has been invited to give lectures and workshops in many universities and art institutions at home and abroad.

In my spare time, I insist on doing design work as a gastronome

Xiari Zheng, born in Beijing in 1995, graduated from the Sculpture Department of School of art and design, Beijing University of technology in 2017. Breaking through the functionality of tableware at first sight, he let the material grows freely, turning into ornaments, sculptures or jewelry; like vines growing, the transparent media connects food and hands. It presents things that can be touched. And he also is continuing to indulge in the conversation with glass. The attempt to endow touchable space and objects with life and energy is the intention of this participation. as some shapes can only be observed when the outline is exposed, touched and displayed on multiple sides. When the user's hands move these "tools", the new appearance and disappearance will generate new visual memory through transparent materials.
