Dates:
October 11th-23rd 2024 | December 06th 2024 - January 08th 2025.

This year’s central theme is OUT OF CONTEXT, an invitation to look beyond ornament and discover how jewelry can represent a stand against injustices. Through provocative forms and innovative materials, the pieces on display challenge the viewer, urging them to reflect on topics such as oppression, censorship, consumerism, and environmental emergencies. Contemporary jewelry doesn’t shine; it provokes. This approach is brought to life thanks to the curatorial work of Eleonora Varotto, in collaboration with Lisa Balasso and supported by international partners such as Brussels Jewellery Week, Roma Jewelry Week, and Romanian Jewelry Week.

The I DON’T SHINE, I have something to say exhibition fits perfectly into the context of Venice Design Week, offering a fresh perspective on the role of jewelry in contemporary art. The works on display do not merely adorn the body but transform it into a space for critical reflection, turning the wearer into a living canvas that denounces the wrongs of our time.

Artists on display
The environmental issue, focused on respect for the planet and the urgent need to find solutions for a more harmonious coexistence between humanity and the Earth, is reflected in the works of artists Metalsmith Liz (United States), Rikke Lunnemann (Denmark), Valeria Florescano Mexico), Madalina Radulea (Romania) and Rose Luker (France). Through their creations, these artists celebrate the beauty of nature and draw attention to the animal world, endangered species, and the urgency to preserve the precious resources we have, which are becoming increasingly scarce.
The works of Saskia Shutt (Belgium), Taylor Chin (Italy), Ho Oi Ying Valerie (United States), Sara Vanicek (Czech Republic), and Ana Cardim (Portugal), on the other hand, resonate as powerful denunciations against corrupt political systems, patriarchy, and all forms of slavery. Through their creations, they advocate for gender equality and the right to intellectual and creative freedom.
Qianying Zhu (United States), Teresa Sansón (Venezuela), Pei Han Wu (Taiwan), Han Ning Chiang (United Kingdom), and Anita Sondore (Latvia) celebrate what is still good in life through their jewelry: the beauty of people, the power of progress, and self-awareness, emphasizing inner well-being and harmony with oneself.
Willy Van de Velde (Belgium), Evgeniia Elanic (Georgia), Leticia Salgado Mexico), Marie Therese Wolf (Spain), Amálie Comrie (United Kingdom), and Can Sun (China) focus on the role of jewelry as a catalyst for change. Their creations reflect, with a touch of irony, on the essence of ornament itself, challenging and provoking the observer. The works find their ideal home in a setting rich with history and beauty: Palazzo Nani Mocenigo. Located a short walk from the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the palace becomes a precious treasure chest for these creations, offering a suggestive backdrop that amplifies the message of each piece on display.

The exhibition is not only an opportunity to admire works of extraordinary craftsmanship but also to meet the designers in person, who will be present on October 13th, 2024, to engage with the public and share the stories behind their creations.

I DON’T SHINE, I have something to say is not just an exhibition; it is an invitation to dialogue, reflection, and awareness. In an era where inequality, environmental crises, and political oppression are increasingly pressing, contemporary jewelry becomes a tool to give a voice to the voiceless, to denounce and propose solutions.
