In this exhibition, two veteran female artists, Kanya Charoensupkul and Beppe Kessler, each shaped by distinct countries, cultures, and artistic traditions, draw upon these diverse inspirations—both beautiful and unsettling—translating them into visual narratives.
Artist list
Kanya Charoensupkul, Beppe Kessler
Our environment—both natural and manmade—along with the events surrounding us, has long served as a wellspring of inspiration for artists.
Their works reflect their inner states of mind with fluid, open-ended stories of life expressed through their use of shape, form, color, and texture. While their art leans toward the abstract, it remains uncategorized within traditional abstraction, perhaps because both artists work across various media not typically aligned with this genre, using unique methods to express their artistic visions.
Materials are central to both artists’ work, deeply connected to their training. Kanya incorporates paper into her paintings, using it to construct textures and forms, while Beppe integrates textiles, stretching fabric over carefully designed and crafted frames. Both artists also engage with collage: Beppe in her small sculptures and wearable art, and Kanya directly within her paintings.
ATTA Gallery is honored to serve as the “intersection” where these two artists and their creative paths meet. We hope that this duo exhibition will foster a dialogue between their practices, where techniques and colors intersect, revealing commonalities amid differences.
About Artists
Beppe Kessler (b. 1952, The Netherlands), a contemporary painter and jewelry maker, lives and works in the Netherlands. Since graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 1979 as a textile designer, she has pursued art alongside her design career. Known for her unconventional jewelry, blending diverse materials, she has twice received the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize, the top prize for contemporary jewelry professionals, in 1997 and 2009. Whether crafting a painting, object, or piece of jewelry, Kessler invents her own language by continuously questioning materials and techniques, seeking new possibilities.
Kanya Charoensupkul (b. 1947, Thailand) has been creating and exhibiting her work locally and internationally since the 1970s, following her training in printmaking. As one of Thailand’s most active and respected female artists, she retired from a distinguished teaching career as a professor emeritus at Silpakorn University and was honored only a few months ago as a National Artist in Visual Art (Mixed Media) for 2023 by the Ministry of Culture of Thailand. Her latest works are currently featured at the 4th Bangkok Art Biennale at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
Opening information: Saturday, November 9 from 5.00 to 7.30 PM.
Hours of Operation: Wednesday - Sunday 13:00-18:30 hrs.
