Opening Exhibition of The Closer Gallery: Jewelry in Portraits

Wearing the piece of jewelry of their own choice, each “collector” sitting in front of the camera exhibited their unique charm. This way of presentation can be recognized as a portrait, but beyond that, it can also be called a “photo between people and jewelry”. At our opening exhibition, the 12 photography works and the jewelry inside each photo will be exhibited at the same time.

At the moment we got the key to the new jewelry gallery, we had begun thinking about how to meet our dear visitors in the first exhibition.
We are kind of curious that in the past three years, where those jewelry pieces that you took away from each “The Small Jewelry Exhibition” have gone, and how you are “getting along” with each other. With different occupations, ages, personalities and preferences, each of you had chosen and brought back the most unique piece of jewelry for yourself. When you wear it, how would your own appearance and the look of your jewelry reflect each other? If possible, we would love to take a “portrait” for you with your exclusive jewelry inside.
At the end of 2019, the new house of our jewelry gallery began decoration. We expect our “opening exhibition” to be unveiled after the Lunar New Year. In view of the massive work to be done in advance and the execution restrictions, we contacted 12 collectors of our jewelry pieces from those residing in Beijing or its vicinity who are willing to take their portraits. Thus, while watching the progress of the construction site, we set out our exploration and shooting journey.
Fortunately, every meeting with our “collectors” was pleasant and memorable. Among them are the elders, teachers and schoolmates that we are familiar with, as well as friends that we are only acquainted. Walking into their respective living or working spaces allowed us to witness a more natural and authentic facet of them. We did not deliberately set any pose, but just occasionally pressed the shutter while chatting until we used up 12 negatives for each of them. Although we could not check the exact image during the shooting process, fortunately, every time after the photos were developed, we would always “meet” the best, perhaps not the most perfect photo but the most touching one.

It is not only an independent work of art, but also produces a closer connection with the figure because of the “jewelry nature”. The jewelry and the figure of portrait are therefore in a perfect harmony with each other. This way of presentation can be recognized as a portrait, but beyond that, it can also be called a “photo between people and jewelry”. At our opening exhibition, the 12 photography works and the jewelry inside each photo will be exhibited at the same time.
Although the opening exhibition of “The Small Jewelry Gallery” comes later than our expectation, when we developed all the 12 photos and hung them upright on the wall, our hearts were filled with great affection and gratitude again while looking at those portraits with our jewelry inside.
