Intro
In early 2020 I spent time in New Zeeland/Aotearoa as an Artist in Residence at Dunedin School of Art.
Very sudden, middle of March, I had to return to Sweden. From the time on the island, with inspiring conversations, endless walking, and hands-on making my return luggage contained not just things but also notes, memories and thoughts. There were also boxes with samples, sketches, stones, dried flowers and gifts. These treasure boxes and their contents became part of a reference library I used for the coming time in my studio.

Together with photo documentation from my stay, and with a bit of perspective, I tried to capture some kind of essence. Searching for colours, draw a landscape as well as fine details. Experiments with enamel followed, a technic/material I came back to now and then over the years. The pandemic months brought lots of time and focus in my studio, a positive effect, I enjoyed this. As a lucky coincidence, or consciously the enamel tryouts and my imaginary pictures merged and something began to appear.

…lines of the landscape, layers of green and endless clear blue sea, streets, bricks, sweet pea confetti, buckets with apricots, and millions of stars in dark night…

During my walks around Dunedin, I used frottage as a method of catching not just visual but also tactile values. I could later transfer the textures to my enamel pieces where matt and glossy surfaces brought also depth and light, and by mixing pigments a colour contains not just one, but many shades.

I often look for dialogue with other medias, it brings both perspectives, context and understanding of my own work. As I was working with “colour pictures”, I found an inspiring company with some favourite painters, such as Inge Schiöler, Peter Doig and also Barbara Tuck, whose work I got to know during my stay in New Zeeland/Aotearoa.

The pieces of JOURNEY are individuals, but as they grew, they became a whole, a landscape or a map, connected and relating to each other.
The work on show at OONA Gallery is a beginning, still on a JOURNEY.
